No matter which mountain we are heading to, the peak of it is surely a place where cool air is expected whole year round.  Mae Salong Mountain is one of those you are looking for. Among many Chiang Rai attractions, Doi Mae Salong is one of the most popular places tourists visit in winter because of its low temperature at the top. Other activities available here include a visit to tea houses, tea plantations, tasting stewed pork leg with hot steamed buns and Yunnan food.    Doi Mae Salong locates in Santa Kiri village, Mae Salong Nork sub district, Mae Fah Luang district, Chiang Rai province. Comfortable transportation is provided and allows you to have a sight-seeing of the roadside with layers of mountain view. Once you arrive the village on the top, there are many nice spots for photography lovers, restaurants, and enough hotels for tourists. Villagers gather in the morning at a market to sell agricultural products and some snacks you might have not seen before. Popular souvenirs are tea leaves and dried or preserved fruits.    Attractions in Mae Salong for your Chiang Rai Travel Sinakarintra Stit Mahasantikhiri Pagoda situates on the highest spot of Doi Mae Salong. Tourists can reach there by car. The pagoda was built as a tribute to Princess Srinagarindra (King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s mother). The pagoda is adapted Lanna building with many stories. Each story offers a nice lookout to beautiful scenery.   Former Chinese  National Army Monument Thailand was built as a memorial to Chinese National soldiers who lived in this village and helped Thai government army to fight communism. The Tomb of General Duan Si Wern, former Haw or Yunnan Chinese 5th Battalion, 93rd Brigade. The tomb’s area also offers viewpoint to Mae Salong mountain.  Buatong field, Doi Mae Hua Kam, situates in Mae Salong village near by Mae Sa Long mountain. It is very popular Buatong or Mexican Sunflower blooming festival in Thailand during year end season. Tea Plantation 101 is one of the most famous Chiang Rai Attractions. The tea trees are lined in staircase field. You can experience tea picking and production, tea brewing, and tea tasting. Of course, tea as souvenir are available for purchase.  Wang Pud Tarn tea plantation is another attraction where tourists love to visit. Thanks to lion statues and a sculpture of a big tea pot pouring tea in to aa cup at the entrance of the field.

How to get there

Route 1: Use state highway 10 Chiang Rai – Mae Chan. Turn left at the 860th kilometer marker following Mae Salong signage. It will lead to you through tribal villages until you reach T-junction at Chiang Rai Hilltribes Development and Welfare Centre. Turn right highway 1234 to the 9th kilometer T-junction at Baan E-Gor. Then turn left to enter the road to Mae Salong mountain.

Route 2: Use state highway number 10 Chiang Rai – Mae Chan to head towards kilometer 856, make a turn to enter highway 1089 Mae Chan – Taton. This route will let you pass through Pa-Teung hot spring until reaching Kew Satai T-junction. There will be a direction sign to Mae Salong mountain at the 55th kilometer marker.

Starting at bus station in Mae Chan market and get off at Kew Satai station. Take another local bus that goes along Kew Satai – Mae Salong route.
